How did a jazz musician win Best New Artist at the Grammys? Jazz isn't even music! Jazz has no rhythm, no melody, no beat, or any of that; it's just a bunch of random musical instruments playing random notes. It's worse than noise. I'd rather listen to an abominable cross between Country Western and Rap and Gospel, at least it would sound like music.

How did you ever get the impression that jazz has "no beat, no melody... random instruments playing random notes"?

The one thing jazz always has is rhythm, although it may not be one of the simple ones found in pop music. Jazz also relies on chord progressions, which are structurally related to a melody. The usual form of a jazz piece is that the entire group first plays one verse of a composition pretty much the way it was written, establishing the rhythm, melody, and chord structure. Then each performer takes a turn improvising a solo based on the composition - if the unadorned version continued to play in the background, chances are you'd be able to hear the musical relationship. Finally, they all play the original piece again as an ensemble.

There was one rather extreme form of jazz, known as "hard bop", that was very popular in the 1950s, and that could sound pretty random. But it's only one style out of many. Here are a few examples of other styles:

(Incidentally, I used to work in radio. I was mostly an engineer, and worked with DJs in just about every musical style except rap/hip-hop, which hadn't been invented yet. But I also worked as a DJ and announcer myself for a while. As a DJ, I played... country and western.)

What she said. Jazz is not *remotely* random. I have no idea where you got that idea, but I as I've pointed out, I've *played* jazz while you were here and you didn't mind.

No you haven't. I've heard jazz, on jazz stations and walking by people playing jazz here in Portland. Nothing you've played for me sounds anything like those.

I've listened to lots of kinds of music from all over the world. I generally find at least some artists I like in almost every genre. But every time I hear jazz anywhere, my brain has a strange reaction to it... like it knows it's supposed to be music, but nothing sounds right. It sounds to me like noise that's trying and failing to be organized. I can hear music in noise, but jazz? Jazz is not music, to my ear.

So maybe it's just me, but jazz doesn't sound anything like music to me.

Did you listen to any of the things I linked to? Try to forget that someone wrote the word "jazz" next to them, and just LISTEN. You can't tell me that they "aren't music"!
