Dial-up is the only choice in many areas. If you are more than some distance (a few miles, *as the cable runs*) from the phone switch, you *can't* get DSL. Physically impossible.

So folks out in the country are stuck with dial-up or satellite. And satellite is both expensive and has significant lags.

If you are lucky and near a cell tower, you can get internet that way, but it tends to be spendy.

Heck, where *I* live you couldn't get DSL not all that many years back. That's because the phone switch was way out in St. Johns. Poor neighborhood, so no incentive to invest the money required to upgrade (by adding "satellite" switches in neighborhoods)
