Writer's Block: R/evolutionary war

If humanity were to become extinct, do you think another animal species would evolve to take our place? What lessons do you think they'd learn from our successes and failures?
The dolphins and the penguins are already conspiring together to conquer the Earth. They're trying to enlist the help of the chimpanzees, since chimps have opposable thumbs. So far the negotiations aren't going well, since chimps like the taste of penguins and can't breathe underwater. But if their infernal triad ever works out, we should all tremble in fear! FEAR I SAY!!!

Do not underestimate the octopods. I'm sure that they're aiding the sea-snails experiments in genetic engineering. But the chimps would only side with the others long enough to take over for themselves and crows and ravens would, seeing our defeat being eminent, reluctantly leave our lush garbage dumbs and join the chimp's revolt in exchange for shiny things.

Actually, it might be slugs rather than snails.
