I just saw something on the news, this memorial cross in the middle of the Mojave Desert on government property is under consideration to become a national monument, or something like that. But some people are freaking out about it. The controversy led some people to put a wooden box over it until a decision can be made.

Sheesh. I understand things like not wanting the 10 commandments in a statue on a government building, but for goodness sake, people! It's in the middle of frakking nowhere! Why should anyone care if it's a cross, when it's in the asscrack of nowhere?

An ideal I can be lax on
Yeah and it's a memorial which necessarily includes symbols that inspire specific emotional reactions in many or different people. It's a social thing and as such, ideally, reflects diversity; an openness to different kinds of expression. In that context, I find a cross acceptable.

That's just me. While I understand the controversy and on some level support those who would be against it, it just doesn't seem like such a big deal so I'd rather put my energy elsewhere. Having this compassion in such areas I may be perceived as not-so 'hard-line', as they say, in fact and thus my message of secularism and even atheism may be more accessible to others.
