Breaking the mold

I'm reading old Sinfest comics. In one, Slick says "God broke the mold when he made me". Now, I know that "broke the mold" means, as in metallurgy, breaking the mold you pour the metal into so you can't make any more like that one. But what exactly does that *mean*? Does it mean God made a mold, made the person, and then thought, "There shall be no more like this, this one is too awesome to copy." Or does it mean, "Ugh, this one sucks too much to copy."? Or something else?

Yes. :-)

Seriously, it can also mean "the mold broke when making this one". That's actually not that uncommon with metal casting.

Well, yes, being too cold is one way to get a mold to break. :-)

To me, the phrase is not meant to be specific, but rather to infer 'only' uniqueness'. Neither 'good' nor 'bad'. Also... I don't recall hearing the phrase used with the word 'God'. I've always heard it said using the word 'They'.

I think that may actually be my 'convenient memory' though... perhaps because I believe that 'God' DID break the mold, each time each one of us is created, and to 'make fun' of that, would be 'sacreligious' (sp?).

Thanks for bring this up... I just thought of a (new to me) 'concept'... that after each one of us is made, and our molds are broken... the pieces are saved, and some of them are used from each person, when a new life is created.
