A fandom meme I made up

What 5 fictional inventions would you most like to be real?

1. Portable holes, from certain cartoons. Seriously, how much more awesome an invention could there be?

2. Warp drive! Need I say more?

3. Replicators, like on Star Trek!

4. Prosthetic bodies, like on GITS:SAC

5. Easy, complete sex changes.

I think I'd replace #1 with Transporter beams. ^_^ Preferably very afforadable, say, not much more than $5 per beam. Quite a few people (you being one) that I'd love to be able to just beam over and visit ^_^

Oooh! That too. If you don't mind being killed, disassembled, and reassembled on the other end.

Me, I'd prefer some kind of device that opened up portals from one place to another.

Actually, teleportation is a bigger can of worms than replicators/fabbers.

Try and track down a copy of Niven's essay "The Theory and Practice of Teleportation". It's been included in several of his collections.

Short version of the critical poiint: Any teleportation setup that doesn't require *both* a transmitter *and* a receiver is a recipe for a short, ugly war.

Gravity control is THE essential system of the spaceships of my Zedaleph species. They even use it to start fusion reactions in their fusion reactors. (Using fission reactions to power the gravity control before the fusion reaction starts.

Gravity control also gets them off the ground, deflects space debris when they're going at near-lightspeed (in-system only), making wormholes, and to go at near-lightspeed.

What are autodocks?

My personal choices.
1 Medical nano technology - to repair my many damaged systems

2 Brain taping and body production - so I can abandon my many damaged systems

3 Immersive neural stimulation VR - so I can avoid my many damaged systems

4 A cure for all sexually transmitted disease. (Other diseases would be a bonus, but, you know, priorities.)

5 Batteries of awesome, so something the size of a car battery can power a car for weeks. Something the size of a button cell power a PV for its useful life.

Re: My personal choices.
Fuck brain taping, I think nanites could learn to slowly replace the brain, neuron by neuron over the course of a year and so your brain from then on would be indestructable, or nearly so.
Of course, the nanites I use in my fantasies of that nature are from my Traipah books. They're of Na'Voom Da design and are made of the indestructable metal called crystalanium. Those nanites are fairly intelligent without being AI's, and could not only replace your brain (with you still alive after the fact) but could bring your whole body back into peak condition, even making it better than it's ever been. And would act as your new primary (and more intelligent) immune system.

One thing I learned recently is that old age and the ills that come from it are the result of an overactive immune system that doesn't know when to stop. And the reason vegans live longer than meat eaters I found is because the older a meat eater gets, the greater the chance of animal protein leaking into parts of the body it shouldn't be leaking into. If the immune system develops a resistence to this leaking animal protein, it's a recipe for disaster because then radiation or heat could mutate the lymphocytes of the immune system into thinking that human protein (which is very similar to animal protein, especially if said animal protein is mammal flesh) needs to be attacked. Which, in plain English, is cancer. Or, if you're lucky, arthritis.

PS
Batteries of awesome, so something the size of a car battery can power a car for weeks. Something the size of a button cell power a PV for its useful life.

In the Traipah stories, the Na'Voom Da species (native to a different planet) invented a way of using power pulled in from White Hyperspace. All their technology is powered that way, even their nanites. And they've had thousands of years to perfect the technology, so "now" (in the 32rd century) their "hyperspace power generators" can be any size, even (as you may have guessed) at the molecular level. One of their generators the size of a button could power a *motorcycle* for 1000 years.
Only problem is, those generators don't convert the power from hyperspace into electricity, since their tech runs right off the stuff. So they'd have to make you a motorcycle with their own technology.

1. Teleportation, no matter how it's done, as long as it can get a person from A to B within a few seconds without using too much energy. There are too many people in too many distant places I'd like to visit.

2. Full immersion VR which seems as realistic as the real world. Like STTNG holodecks.

3. Replicators would be nice, yes.

4. A wearable computer with a brain interface.

5. For sex changes, I'd rather have the Z chromosome, as seen in Zerophilia.
