I think the word is "felgercarb".

And, most cons run on volunteer labor anyway. The registration fees are to cover stuff like what the space the con uses costs. (And paying for the Guest of Honor as well as supplies)

Alas, since you have to plan a con a year or more in advance, donations don't work well.

Yes, and DonationCon those costs would be covered by donated money.

Why not?

Where are you going to get folks to donate $100,000 or so?

Think about it. Orycon has *more* than 2000 members. Likely more like 3000 or more these days. At $50 each that's 100 to 150 *thousand* dollars.

And you need a lot of that *in advance*. Orycon has access to money from OSFCI, but needs to pay it back if it can. And "excess" money gets given back to OSFCI so they can sponsor future cons and cover losses.

I know some folks where were involved with an attempt to start a second con in Portland back in the 80s. Took them *years* to pay off the debt.

Hotels want their money *in advance*. And the spaces have to be reserved a year (sometimes more) in advance.

That's because the hotels (and convention centers) lose money if the spaces aren't in use by paying customers most of the time. And that means lining them up *well* in advance (so they can try to arrange a replacement if a deal falls thru). Add in things like advertising and convention attendees having to arrange travel and vacation time and things are pretty much locked in 6-8 months in advance. Changes after that are a nightmare.
