Slow computer

I just right-clicked a picture and hit "Save As," then counted the seconds to see how long it took for the "Save As" screen to come up. It took 14.5 seconds to come up... and that was pretty *fast* for this computer. (My desktop PC).

When was the last time you defragged the HD? Also, what percentage of the drive space is free? At some point below 10% performance goes to hell.

Well I was going to a week ago, did the analysis, and it told me it didn't need defragging. As for drive space, lemme check... out of 74.4 gig total, I have 12.4 gig free. o_O

Well, in that case, time to look for processing hogs. Open Task Manager, and click on the Processes tab. Then click on the CPU column to sort processes by percentage of CPU time being used.

If you find a CPU hog, try closing the associated program and then opening it again.

Oh yeah, if the "default" directory (or the one you most recently used, if the program remembers that) for saving files has too much stuff in it, that'll slow things down too, because it has to generate a directory listing.

That's why I have a directory I use for saving all that stuff and then move the files somewhere else every so often.

What I really need to do is what I used to do... I never used to save stuff to the hard drive for very long. I need to burn disks to clear space. I'm thinking of starting with videos first.
