Question

Watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer right now, and there's this scene where Angel is getting his pigs blood from the butcher's. A couple questions occurred to me just now in response:

1. How does he pay for it?
2. Does he *need* to pay for it? Maybe they just give the stuff away? Hell if I know.

Butchers sell pigs blood to make black puddings with.

Me too.

And he should tell the butcher that he's summoning demons from the netherworld.

Depending on the butcher, it could be free. If it's in an area where there's little call for it, you could get it for free. Just like if you go to a fishmonger in an area where people don't use fish heads, you can get them free or cheaply. But if he just went to Chinatown, he could buy the blood out of big buckets, just sitting there waiting to be ladled out. No special trips needed!

Does LA have a Chinatown? If so, I'll bet that's where he goes.

Do the Chinese dig blood pudding too?

And he probably pays for it in moneys. I'm sure he'd have no trouble getting enough to pay for that - it wouldn't be very expensive. Maybe by pawning lost items that he finds while slouching through the darkness?

Yeah, cuz I was gonna say it's not like he could get a day job.

Indeed! He'd make a great night watchman.

Well, actually, they had to pay rent and/or taxes, whatever it was, to keep the hotel in their hands. They almost lost it once, or did lose it once. I'm guessing he got money from the investigations, either as fees or donations. I haven't watched Angel in so long.

Well I remember that, which is why I was referring to pre-Angel Angel. From Buffy.

well.. i think Angel has some of that "immortal wealth" left over from his Angelus days. He never seems to be broke. Even when they started out in LA, him and Cordelia and Doyle... He always seemed to have plenty of cash despite their meager caseload and all the pro-bono work.

I'm not sure. There was that time he looked like a bum, crawling through the alleys eating rats. But maybe he was too guilty at the time to spend that ill-gotten wealth.

Well, I'm thinking he has little passion for the finer things in life, since he's dead and pure. That could have easily been him just... mixing things up, in his mind ;) Pig's blood, rat's blood; whatever.

You know vampires. Old money.

Or maybe he manipulates using his powerful vampire charm.

I figure no butcher would just give it away. Health codes, ickyness. Unless he's a vampire contact and knows what he needs it for.

Makes sense.
