WTF Safari

Okay, this is weird. For several minutes the CPU of my computer has been running at 100%. The only program I have up is Safari - my web browser - and it's not even doing anything. Seriously, I hit STOP on all TWO tabs and let it sit for several minutes and Safari is STILL using 97% of the CPU's power for reasons I can't begin to fathom. Nothing is loading! Safari should not be running that hot! What the flying fudgemonkeys is going on?

Which version of Safari are you running. There's a memory lleak in one of them that has been patched by Apples latest update.
I'm using v3.1.2 on an old PowerMac and Tiger 10.4.11. Safari has always used a bit more memory than I cared for but I love it other than that. I now hav 1.5Gig of Ram and 680G of hard drive space (over half full already) and it's been running fine.

OH and turn off all of the crap that goes and prefetches websites. THAT will eat the processor. Are you running a PPC chipset or is yours an Intel machine?

Windows XP Home is what she's running.

Oh, I'm terribly sorry. My sympathies and condolences.
I forgot that Apple released Safari for Windoze machines.

Could be worse. She could be running Vista.

OH and turn off all of the crap that goes and prefetches websites.

How do I do that?

Since I don't use Windows with all of the UNNECESSARY Reagistry and other stuff, I don't have a clue how to shut that down in you system. Check the Preferences in Safari and see if there is a checkbox for automatically updating feeds and uncheck it.

Oh gods, I have 3.1.2. So THAT'S the cause of the memory problems! How do I get the patch?

3.1.2 IS the fixed version so you may have something else going on. There was a security holle that was fgound in ALL browsers and Camino, Firefox and Safari and others patched it.

This would be my guess too. I run across sites that just hang Safari up. even when I try them in firefox they sit there with the beachball spinning. I usually have to force quit the browser and then make a note to NEVER go there again.
