Star Trek options for the future

I was just thinking about how there are no Star Trek series anymore. This must be remedied some day. But in order to make a successful series, they need not only awesome characters, but they need a rich environment in which to mine story ideas. Here are, in my opinion, some ideas:

1. Go to whatever the 4th quadrant is called. (Beta Quadrant?) After all, the show has been to the Alpha, Delta, and Gamma Quadrants.
2. Set the new series in the future. (Maybe on a timeship?)
3. Open up other galaxies; maybe the Q become satisfied that humans are ready, and lift the galactic barrier and then we can have a Star Trek: Andromeda Galaxy. Or something like that.
4. Have the crews of two previous series meet up on a permanent basis?
5. Maybe the Borg become a member of the Federation. (Okay, that one was just for giggles.:-)
6. This space intentionally left blank.

I put together a package for a Star Trek series about 10 years ago in a fit of madness.

Never did anything with it, and it's a good ensemble piece which would fit into most shared SF concept-worlds. So maybe it'll get used one day.

1. Go to whatever the 4th quadrant is called. (Beta Quadrant?) After all, the show has been to the Alpha, Delta, and Gamma Quadrants.

Check the maps. Beta Quadrant is way far away from the Federation. Do note that both Delta and Gamma Quadrants were only reachable by things the Federation didn't have.

Keep in mind just how *big* the galaxy is. Ask me to show you the map for the old Outreach game. And explain the scale.

2. Set the new series in the future. (Maybe on a timeship?)

Meh. Time travel series don't work well unless you really limit them. Dr. Who and Time Tunnel are the only two to make it more than one season. At least that I can recall.

3. Open up other galaxies; maybe the Q become satisfied that humans are ready, and lift the galactic barrier and then we can have a Star Trek: Andromeda Galaxy. Or something like that.

Sheer *scale* is against you.

Note that figure for the number of stars. That's over 30 stars for every human on Earth.

And the distances are insane as well.

4. Have the crews of two previous series meet up on a permanent basis?

Not gonna fly for various reasons. Basically,m Paramount ran the franchise into the ground. Revival attempts by them are apt to produce "zomibies" rather than viable shows.

What about a multi-generational / colony vessel. Brave new worlds and all that? Of course, they could just beam the TARDIS aboard. *JIM... he's got two hearts...*

(swear to got that was in a fanfic I read in the mid 80's...)

Who got command of Voyager? They shat on that series, and for no good reason. Jake sisko as an officer on a Vulcan vessel Tuvok is captain of...

Jake Sisko was a writer, remember? He wasn't interested in Starfleet.

I wish Voyager had lasted longer.

Try this...
1) Set it on a colony world. I mean, look at all the shit that happened to colonies in the original series. You were lucky if anyone was still alive when the ship hailed the port!

2) Solicit top SF writers in the field to write episodes, or at least submit stories to be turned into episode scripts. This is what gave us some of the greatest ST:TOS episodes. Sure, I'd love to see Harlan Ellison do it again ... but I'd also love to turn loose the likes of Lois McMaster Bujold and David Weber.
