The sound of one hand clapping

One of the many things that caught my attention in the Principia Discordia was a quote, "The sound of one hand clapping," next to a picture of a hand. My first thought was, "can you clap with only one hand?" Then, of course, I realized it was supposed to be some deep Zen thing or other. Still, the idea stuck with me, and I began experimenting to see if it was possible to clap with one hand. Now I can do it, and I've used it as a joke with cabbages and other people. I'll ask them what's the sound of one hand clapping, and they'll reply that you can't clap with just one hand. I assure them that yes, you can clap using only one hand that isn't being hit against anything but itself, and then I do this:

And so this is the sound of one hand clapping:

The sound of one hand clapping!

Chaotic Blessings;

Makes you think. Nothing in particular... just creates thoughts you didn't think ebfore. I love those little puzzles. It amazmes me that so many people cannot connect those little things with "learning how to think", and conceieve of how beneficial it is to exercise the mind like that. But I guess you have to learn to look beyond the shell of things for that... and even that's beyond many.

So, was the point of that line in the Discordia to make readers think, or what?

A Discordian I know said koans are meant to make you think, but not in the way of solving a puzzle... a koan is not a puzzle. It's like some other Discordian said: when he told his son he was studying Buddha, the son thought for a moment, said, "It's an ocean," and walked away. It's a mindfuck. :-D

So, was the point of that line in the Discordia to make readers think, or what?

It was a mindfuck... and a mindfuck is something that makes you think in new and unusual ways (unsticking you from the normal routines of your thought processes). There's not always an answer, but it makes you think more creatively and chaotically.
