Challenged books

I was reading the ALA site for most frequently challenged books, and was looking at the page of "top 10 most frequently challenged authors." This means authors whose works are constantly getting people telling libraries to ban their works. I had some major WTF moments upon seeing the authors in bold:

Top Ten Challenged Authors 1990-20041

1. Alvin Schwartz

2. Judy Blume

3. Robert Cormier

4. J.K. Rowling

5. Michael Willhoite

6. Katherine Paterson

7. Stephen King

8. Maya Angelou

9. R.L. Stine

10. John Steinbeck

I mean, seriously, WHAT? People actually challenged those? I can vaguely understand R.L. Stine, but Maya Angelou, Judy Blume, and John Steinbeck??? What the flying fuck? o_O?

I got an even BIGGER WTF at some of the most challenged books of the 21st century:

1. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

2. "The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier

3. Alice series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

4. "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck

5. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou

6. "Fallen Angels" by Walter Dean Myers

7. "It's Perfectly Normal" by Robie Harris

8. Scary Stories series by Alvin Schwartz

9. Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey

10. "Forever" by Judy Blume
