"The ocean is beautiful."

People talk about the ocean being beautiful, and they go there and play in the waves like it’s just random, ordinary part of their world. But I’m here like “Yes, it’s beautiful, the same way a dying star is beautiful. Or the way a meteor wiping out all humanity would be beautiful. The ocean is great and terrible and monstrous in its beauty. The ocean is one of the Great Old Ones. I look upon it and its sheer size and power makes me lose my mind a little bit.”

Like seriously, even at night. I once went to the ocean at night; it was off in the distance, about a mile’s walk worth of sand, and there were lights on illuminating the sand, but where the ocean was, it was like this black void, like the earth was flat and I’d found the edge, I could go over there and just step off into the airless abyss of space.

So like, yeah. The ocean is a Great Old One. Unimaginably huge, and ancient, and powerful. Uncaring. It just Is. It can kill you in an instant and not even notice you. It can kill thousands of people, and level entire cities without even noticing or caring. There’s no malice in it. You are nothing to it. All of humanity is nothing to it. Try to comprehend its size and power, and you’ll go mad.

The sun is a Great Old One as well, but that’s for another post.
