Potpourri 3

Potpourri (Stuff I found, mostly)

Attention: I have put my new Writer's Block archive community, ljswritersblock, in as a suggestion for the Spotlight. Please help out by seconding that suggestion! I've even written you a description to use:
"Need something to write about, and the official Writer's Block archive - with its measly 7 or 8 pages - not showing you enough? Then come on over to <lj user="ljswritersblock">, a new community that has archived over 500 old Writer's Block questions!"

Atlas that shows the etymological meanings of place names, very amusing! New York City = New Wild Boar Village, which is all too fitting. :-)

There's this LJ community called topicless that is, as you guessed it, topicless. The profile says you can post anything at all. Weirdly, though, it's moderated!

"Alienist" means "psychiatrist"? Odd.

What doesn't get enough coverage?

The chief minister of the Indian state of Maharashtra has offered to resign amid criticism of the handling of the Mumbai attacks. Vilasrao Deshmukh said he was awaiting a Congress party decision. His deputy, RR Patil, has already resigned. Oh, and jrfrench had a funny, though friendslocked, response.

While working on improving solar cells, an accident led to a discovery that could render digital cameras obsolete.

Is science fiction dying? I think not. Sure, science is getting stranger than science fiction, but there will always be new frontiers. And if nothing else, there will always be soft scifi.

Got Altzheimer's? Smoke pot.

OMG, I think I wore out my poor Opera browser yesterday with those 500+ posts to ljswritersblock. I'm currently using Google Chrome because Opera refused to start. Something about a file it needed being lost and telling me to run scandisk, which I have set to do when the computer next restarts.

Pimp a community: daily_grail - Awesome stuff, half the stuff in this post came from there.

I made some Writer's Block suggestions:
1. Do you believe in magic?
2. Some LiveJournal communities have awesome ideas but not enough membership or activity. What communities do you think deserve more attention and activity?
