Well, gender may be a social construct, but that doesn't mean it's not real. And oddly enough gender seems to get divided in the same ways in quite different cultures.

A number of cultures have 5 genders. With pretty much the same division.

1. male-bodied masculine
2. male-bodied feminine
3. female-bodied masculine
4. female-bodied feminine
5. "other" (mostly folks who are either physically a mix of sexes, folks who shift mass/fem presentation, or both)

Properly, they should be arranged in sort of an X formation with other in the middle.

Next we have cultures that lump 2 and 3 in with 5. That's three genders.

And then we have the sex=gender bit seen in European derived cultures.

Note that you get some of thing 5-gender categories in the *strangest* place. Like Albania's "sworn virgins" (women who become legally/socially male but aren't allowed to marry).

Makes sense in a place that's had genocidal wars going on for millennia. Sometimes your family/clan doesn't have any adult males left to run things. So this allowed a woman to become "chief" and keep things going without having to deal with the threat of a marriage making the group get subsumed into another one.

Cool.

I've been using that series of comics about animal families to come up with gender stuff for some of the faery races in my Ravenstone series. This might be helpful too.

Congratulations, you've re-invented the monkey trap used in large chunks of tropical Asia.

Monkey sticks hand in jug/jar to grab a handful of nuts. Neck is too narrow to let him get his hand out without letting go of the nuts. Monkey won't let go, and jar is anchored so he can't drag it off.

and this is why folks in the UK and Europe give *weights* rather than volumes in their recipes.
