You need to read harry Harrison's Deathworld trilogy. I've got them as ebooks...

The bit about hiding under tables and curling up into a ball is to protect from the blast wave.

you can be far enough away for the radiation to merely reduce your life span, but get killing by the broken glass from windows flying at you or chunks of the ceiling falling on you.

In a major metro area there will be a *lot* more people outside the "you're gonna die" radius than inside it.

All the civil defense stuff is and was intended to help the folks outside that radius survive.

Got a couple of Dean Ing books that have survival info for that kind of situation in them, as well as a story about folks surviving a nuclear attack near San Francisco.

If there's a significant attack on the US, I'm toast, because the airport is a target as both a transport hub, and because of the Air National Guard base there.

You, on the other hand, are likely far enough from any targets that you'll have to figure out how to surive the aftermath.
