Quote of the day

" 'Is,' 'is,' 'is' — the idiocy of the word haunts me. If it were abolished, human thought might begin to make sense. I don't know what anything "is"; I only know how it seems to me at this moment."
---Robert Anton Wilson

Which is what it 'is'.

Either we stick with Idealism, where we can only know the truth of our own perceptions and cannot understand objectivity in any way, making the rejection of 'is' irrelevant, or we go with Realism, where in time, through science and observation, we can understand what actually 'is'.

Or we use the IS-less version for science, in court, and on the TV news... and use the other one at times when "is"-ful language doesn't have the same potential to cause harm.

Or we remember that this is pointless semantics.

In the same way that a shoddy workman blames his tools, a shoddy society blames its language.

Still... all the same, language does play a part in continuing to reinforce the shoddiness of the society.

By the way, that quote and the one about life and death are now quotes of the month in my profile. :-)

We either trust our own intelligence and ability, as individuals, or we don't. Fact is, humans as a whole will always make some mistakes. Star Trek says that all the time, even! There's a whole universe of mistakes out there. But with experience we'll make less and less mistakes one day. It's how we, as a whole, grow and out of many mistakes comes great accomplishments and knowledge - it's how we learn. Those without the courage to do, won't and won't prosper to their peak.

A large part of our current mistakes - and the reason that humanity keeps making the same mistakes - is that most people are not people, but rather, they are Sheeple.

Or cabbages.
Either way, they are to be pitied, and then eaten.

One of my English teachers used to declare emphatically that "is-ness is an illness!"
She then went on to make us write an essay in E-prime. It seemed like one of the hardest essays I've ever written, until I went back and just did an auto find-and-replace. Good old Microsoft Word.

For some reason - Gods help us all - my mind just flashed up an image of Ebonics Prime. *Shudders*

Of course, Ebonics is to English as "gangstas" are to black people.
