Sat, 19:29: How racism intersects history, a thought: Would the US have ever bothered to get involved in WWII at all... https://t.co/OSb5TjpfqZ

A lot of Americans wanted to get involved. A lot more didn't.

But the sneak attack by Japan did it. Might have been interesting if they'd managed to deliver the ultimatum *before* they attack as they'd intended.

We might have still gone to war with them. Besides attacking Hawaii, they attacked several other Us territories, and we'd have wanted them back.

Even so, a lot of people *still* didn't want to get involved in Europe. But Hitler blew it. He declared war on *us*. I forget if he did so before or after we declared war on Japan.

If Japan had left US possessions alone, at the very least it'd have taken longer to get us involved. Isolationist sentiments were *really* strong in the US.

And a lot of folks were quite happy selling stuff to both sides.

Of course, one of the reasons we got attacked by Japan was because we quit selling them scrap metal that they needed for their war industries (there may have been oil sales involved as well)

They considered this to be a thinly veiled attack on them. It may have been. Then again it was technically required by our neutrality.

On the gripping hand, we were selling a lot of stuff to folks in Europe that might have been questionable as well.

You have to read stuff from back then to get an idea of what things were like. Rather different than now.
