Tue, 06:00: Photo: natgeofound: Cranes lift the face of a statue from the Abu Simbel Temples in Egypt, May... http://t.co/kT2PMxY0QO

The Aswan High dam was going to flood the valley and the temple would have been under a hundred feet of water (and likely would have been damaged badly by the water.

So they took it apart (note that it was carved out of the cliff!) and reassembled it on top of the cliffs far enough back to be safe.

The dam was a "prestige project" funded by the USSR. It generated enough electricity to power the fertilizer plants that were needed because the dam stopped the annual floods from bring down new, fertile soil.

Also, that soil has been silting up the dam. It's amazing it's still usable.

One of those projects that was done to make the country seem modern, but was a *terrible* idea.

Oh yeah, every arab-israeli war after it was built, the Israeli air force would send some p[lanes into Egypt to paint bomb the face of the dam. Basically putting Egypt on notice that they *could* have taken out the dam.

Which would have been really bad news for Egypt.
