Anybody who uses the "what have you got to hide?" argument is either an idiot or has an agenda.

*Everyone* has something that they know, do, or think that *someone* could use against them. especially if they get to play selective quoting games.

The fact that you are into X, when X is neither illegal nor immoral, but *is* socially looked down on can be used to ruin your life.

It's a classic "tyranny of the majority" situation.

Heck, there are things many if not most people are interested in (like mild porn or "racy" stories) that are considered horrible because of a double standard.

The preachers and other sorts rant against them, so people pay lip service to it. And that means anybody can be manipulated if you find out the private info.

*If* we could have a totally open society, *maybe* things would work better. But getting there from here ain't gonna happen anytime soon, and the transition would be pure hell even if it was done to everyone.

Doing it be just removing *some* people's privacy merely hurts those people and givers power to the people who want that private info made public.

Me, I bet we'd have a lot less papparazzi for example) if their private lives were required to be as opens as they try to make the lives of celebrities.

There's a loose cobblestone in that paragraph I keep tripping over.

Typo. Change "be" to "by"

*Slaps forehead.* Herp dee doo, I feel silly.

I thought "loose cobblestone" sounded classier than "typo." :-)
