Elfen Leid

Elfen Leid is an anime. Only 13 episodes, but it is the most awesome anime series I've yet seen!

EDIT: Okay, ONE of the best. Fullmetal Alchemist and Inu-Yasha still kick major butt, too, after all.

Have you seen Eva/Ergo Proxy/Naruto/Rozen Maiden? Because I'm almost certain they're better.

I agree with Ergo Proxy, but Naruto? Gotta be kidding me.

I'm aware that it's verymuch the "flavor of the month" anime, but:

1. I watch it subbed, because the English version is chopped up and altered.
2. It actually is remarkably well thought out and plotted, despite dragging on.
3. Consistent, believable characters.
4. Plot is entirely centered around the main characters, and thus there are no distractions or ridiculous sideplots, which is excellent in a multi-season show.

Well, I only watch subbed anime, myself. And Naruto is just another shounen action anime. It's got the same "must overcome enemy with new technique" tournament-style action as every other shounen action anime of it's type. I have not seen all that's available, but from what I have downloaded I am not impressed. It's flavor of the month for a reason: these anime aren't very deep, they are full of over-the-top action, and that's really about all there is to it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't like it, but comparing it favorably to Elfen Lied is like comparing children's doodles to a masterclass painting.

I also take it you haven't seen the 100+ episodes of mind-numbing filler?

Why would I watch the filler? It's crap.

In any case, there is a lot of character depth, even if it's main appeal is the over-the-top action (which is better than in most shows). For me it is about the characters, and I like the characters - they're interesting and well thought out.

Besides, doesn't Elfin Leid have some kind of incest plot?

You say that like it's a bad thing ;)

Anyway, I'm not saying Naruto is all horrible. But it's no Shakespeare, and I wouldn't put it in the same class as something like Evangelion or Ergo Proxy so much as I'd put it alongside Dragon Ball Z and Bleach.

Ugh. I hate DBZ and Bleach - they're just one useless fight after another, and the fights aren't even interesting.

There are particular moments in it where it gets up to Eva or Ergo Proxy's level, and enough of them where the total awesome airtime is In general, I do find it better at conveying a reaction than most anime.

Admittedly, what I've seen so far of Shippuden has been dissapointing, but in general I find Naruto inventive and thoughtful enough for me to class it above most shounen anime.

Hey now, I happen to like DBZ and DBGT! Yes, they draw everything out way too much and that was annoying. Half an hour to show ten minutes of fighting or powering-up. But I liked the characters and the plot, even if they dragged things out excessively.

But the characters were so ... fake! Inconsistent! Poorly thought out! Annoying! The fights were boring not because they were too long, but because they weren't even close to inventive! And the plot was so ridiculously reliant on these contrived invincible twists.

Yeah, but they were fun characters!

I dunno, maybe they just appeal to the kid in me. :-)

Well the main human character and his cousin live in the same house and she is in love with him (he doesn't reciprocate). But this is Japan we're talking about. Besides, in the Western world it's only been less than 100 years since cousins marrying was no longer acceptable.

Also, in the past of one of the girls they take in (the only human they take in), she was molested by her stepfather. Or at least, made to pose nude for him. She told her mother, her mother didn't believe her, she ran away.

But other than that, nothing.

This makes it no less creepy.

See depressing, creepy plots? No, not my thing. If I want horror content, I'll go read a Stefen King novel. Or better yet, Sailor Nothing.

You're talking to someone who had the major hots for their second cousin way back when, and though she treated me very poorly in response to knowing this, if she changed her mind I'd be with her in a heartbeat. So incest, creepy? Nope. Not in my opinion.

It's not horror, it's science fiction. And though the past of some of the characters was depressing, the life they're making in that old restaurant is uplifting and joyous.

Because I'm almost certain they're better.

That better have been just praise for those programs and not a dis against Elfin Leid. ;-P

I've seen Evangelion. It's cool. Naruto's okay. Never heard of the others.

Rozen Maiden is about dolls, and it has the two best punches in all of anime.

Ergo Proxy is ... weird, and insightful, but very hard to understand or describe.

You might as well torrent the subs for both - they download pretty fast.

I might, if my computer had the internet. I have to use the library computers for the net.

Rozen Maiden sounds weirder than Ergo Proxy.

On a side note, you'd best watch [FLCL, Samurai Seven, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy, both Rozen Maidens, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Excel Saga] before calling Elfin Leid the best.

I just watched it yesterday, and I was so confused by the episode order that I had to go on wikipedia and find out that it was basically two different series.

I've seen FLCL, it is delightfully weird. Not impressed with Samurai Champloo, but then again I don't much care for samurai stories. Cowboy Bebop is okay. Haven't seen any of the others.

Samurai Champloo is very much not a samurai story. It's an anachronistic hip-hop style tale of absurdity and personal growth.

Samurai Seven is a 26-episode sci-fi retake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. The basic themes and characters are the same, though the plot deviates heavily.

Excel Saga is pure absurdity.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a story about a girl who's God but doesn't know it and the boy she likes.
