You know what would be awesome? A 24-hour analog clock. IE, has numbers 1 - 24 in a circle instead of 1 - 12, giving 24

Sight and sound are two sides of the same reason why they've never been popular - peering at the thing from any distance away, all o' them little numbers squeenched together are a major hassle (“Is that 16 o'clock, or 17?”)

Just so, bell towers tolled twelve because whanging away twenty-odd times was a major nuisance and impossible to follow. (“Was that sixteen bells, or seventeen?”)

The modern solution, as clocks and watches sometimes show, is the second twelve smaller and inside the first. If you WANT to see it as 1700 instead of five o'clock, there it is for you.

And why twelve, then, instead of, say, three eights? Well, because the Romans divided the day into twelve hours. Period: There were no night hours, and being one-twelfth of a sidereal day, an “hour” could be anywhere from forty-five to ninety minutes long by our measuring - they didn't measure time any finer than the hour of the day. They weren't launchin' no space satellites…
