Food pantry run

Written last Wednesday.

At the last pagan meetup, someone mentioned a food pantry location being at the Ascention Church not far from the place where the meetup was at. When I looked up the place online on Google street view, I recognized it, having gone by it on the bus every time I came to or from the pagan meetup.

They're open Wednesdays from 5 - 6:30, and Thursdays from 1 - 4. Since I didn't think I'd be able to make it to the Thursday one, I opted to go Wednesday. The timing of this information was perfecet, because the end of the month has been getting longer and longer each month. So I went for the first time today, and got on the list to come around every month. (So they know how much stuff to have.)

Not knowing how much they'd give me, the size of the boxes, or if the boxes would fit in my cart, I didn't take the cart this time. But I will be taking it in future, because the boxes are just the right size, and I got two big ol' boxes of stuff. Because of my situation riding the bus with no cart, I had to take out all the cans and put them in my backpack, then put everything else into one box. Even then, the box hurt my hands. But I got all the stuff home.

Here's what I got this month from them (I won't be doing these lists every month, don't worry):

1 loaf of Dave's Killer Bread (Cracked Wheat) [Yay! I was out of bread.]
6 eggs
2 frozen steaks
1 stick butter/margarine
2 small oranges
1 lemon
3 slices frozen pizza
1 bag of frozen cream of veggie soup
1 bag baby carrots
1 slightly battered zucchini
1 bag organic celery hearts
1 pound frozen ground chicken
1 pound pitted dried plums
1 24oz package of buttermilk pancake mix
2 pounds white beans, dry
1 pound spaghetti
1 pound Barilla piccolini pasta
1 package Pasta Roni (fettucine alfredo)
2 sleeves of Ritz crackers
1 28oz package Quaker brand natural granola
1 can black beans
1 12.5oz can of chunk chicken
1 can corn
1 can apricots in light syrup
1 can Progresso french onion soup
1 can cut green beans
1 5oz package Kettle brand BBQ potato chips
1 can Campbell's chicken noodle soup
1 can pear halves in pear juice
1 jar of creamy peanut butter (now I have three things of peanut butter at home)
2 cans spaghetti sauce
1 can tuna
1 can Nalley Original chili (as if I needed any more of that!:-)
2 pounds white rice (as if I were running out :-)
1 roll toilet paper
1 bar soap (yay! I was running out!)

I think I'm going to use the zucchini, carrots, and celery to make some chicken veggie stuff tonight.

LATER: Yup, zucchini, carrots, and cooked celery makes an excellent stir-fry. I cooked them up with the chicken and put duck sauce on it, served it on rice. Very good! My only problem was that the rice from the food pantry was short-grain, and my cooking instructions are for long-grain rice. So it came out a little sticky despite my careful rinsing and carefully following the directions. First time my rice has come out wrong in many, many months. But with a little soy sauce it loosens up just enough.
