Fuck you, police.

On the news: police officer (chief?) telling the #OWS protestors they need a permit to protest. Bullshit. The 1st Amendment of the Constitution is the only permit that's needed to protest.

Afraid not. Requiring a permit does *not* violate the Constitution. Lomg history on that point.

What would be unconstitutional would be *denying* permits for reasons that don't involve practical matters or other laws.

The whole *purpose* of permits is to allow the city and police to plan so that your protest isn't unnecessarily disruptive.

Remember, you may have the right to protest, but you don't have the right to mess things up for other people in the process.

As a Libertarian, I regret to report that you are incorrect. The Constitution forbids the Federal Government from suppressing dissent (in theory). It does not address nor delimit the powers of State or local authorities, who, being closer to the people with whose consent they govern (in theory), need no such contractual restrictions in place.

As a coincidental example, this is why sundown towns existed - because they could, because there was not and could not be a Federal law against it.

Bobby Kennedy, of course, changed all that - for the Greater Good, you know. Now Federal law supersedes any State or local ordinance, and if you don't like it (medical use of marijuana?), tough shit. Write your Congressman.

*cough 14th and 15th Amendments cough* I've found it interesting that almost nobody allows a State's Rights defense when it comes to say, one state legalizing gay marriage and the terms State's Rights only apply to being allowed to ban Muslims from their legal freedom of assembly and association. One gets the impression state's rights is only for the causes that harm, not the ones that help.

There are legal requirements for protests, and registering for them is part of a legal protest. Mass refusal to register is part of civil disobedience but a lot of Lefties these days forget *why* people like MLK did what they did and would not have the stomach for it if they remembered what he was actually doing. Like most people their idea of doing the right thing does not include willingly triggering the bad people to do the bad thing and being the ones on the receiving end of it.
